USPP Stables on the National Mall

In early 1976, as part of preparations for the Bicentennial Independence Day Celebration, a small group of simple wooden stalls were erected for the horses of the United States Park Police (USPP). Although the structures were designed to be temporary, they have been in continuous use for the past 40+ years.

In mid-2017, a group of concerned equestrians were alerted to the deteriorating state of the stables and decided to take action. In partnership with the National Park Service and the Trust for the National Mall, they have raised private funds to build and maintain a new facility for the USPP. The new building will contain horse stables and support spaces, administrative facilities, and a public information and education gallery. The public will be able to look through the building and observe the police horses in their stalls and in the outdoor paddocks in front of the building.

In the fall of 2021 a groundbreaking ceremony marked the start of the construction phase. The facility is now open to the public.
